Search for gold.
Guard against ruin.

Gryffon is a private advisory and holding company. We have spent more than twenty-five years reading Indian markets, advising institutions, and putting our own capital behind the businesses we help build.

What we do

01

Advisory

Management and investment consulting for institutions, promoters and boards — strategy, market judgement and the questions that ought to be asked before capital is committed.

Our advisory work
02

Investments

The firm holds the partners’ interests in unlisted businesses and acts as the holding company for the ventures they build and back.

Investments and ventures
03

Social impact

CSR strategy, programme design and independent evaluation of whether funded programmes actually work — the evidence a board needs to govern its giving.

Impact practice

The firm

Twenty-five years,
one standard of judgement.

Gryffon began in 1998 as a consultant to institutional stockbrokers. It became a SEBI-licensed portfolio manager, managing money for banks, other portfolio managers and an American hedge fund. In March 2008, reading what was coming, the partners decided to return every rupee of client capital — and did so, in full, the following month.

The licence was retired. The judgement was not. In the years since, Gryffon has consulted on corporate strategy, on urban development in the public sector, and on how companies should measure the social programmes they fund. Today it is also the holding company through which the partners invest.

The name

Why a griffin

The griffin is part eagle, part lion. In the old bestiaries it does two things: it detects poison, and it guards gold.

When the firm took the name it was managing other people’s money, and those two duties described the job exactly — find what is genuinely valuable, and stand between it and disaster. The emblem has not changed since, and neither has the brief.

The partners

Anand P Tandon

Managing Partner

An engineer from IIT Kanpur and a management graduate of IIM Ahmedabad, with more than three decades in Indian equities — institutional research, portfolio management and, latterly, running broking and financial services businesses. A familiar voice on CNBC-TV18 and ET Now, and a columnist on markets.

A management graduate of Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies who leads the firm’s social-impact practice — CSR strategy, education content development, and the independent evaluation of whether corporate programmes deliver what they promise.

Full profile

A small firm, deliberately.

We take on a limited number of engagements each year so that the partners can do the work themselves. If that suits how you like to be advised, we should talk.
