Gryffon is the holding company through which the partners invest. We are not a fund. We manage no outside money. What we put to work is our own, which tends to concentrate the mind.
When the portfolio management business was wound down, the capital that had been committed to the licence stayed with the company. Over time that has given Gryffon a second character: alongside the consultancy, it is now the vehicle that holds the partners’ interests in unlisted companies and the holding entity for new ventures they participate in.
The approach is straightforward. We invest in a small number of businesses we understand, usually early, usually where we know the people, and almost always where we can be useful beyond the cheque. We are patient by temperament and by necessity — unlisted positions do not offer the courtesy of a daily price.
How we invest
Four principles
Own capital only
We invest what belongs to the partners. There are no outside subscribers, no fee on assets, and therefore no incentive to be invested when we would rather not be.
Businesses, not trades
We look for a business that would still be worth owning if the market closed for five years. If the case depends on someone else paying more next quarter, it is not our case.
Risk that is paid for
Every venture carries risk. The discipline is refusing the risk nobody is paying you to take — leverage without cause, complexity without benefit, growth without economics.

Clinician-led healthcare delivered at home — home nursing and palliative care, physiotherapy, memory care and nutrition, with physician visits and diagnostics coordinated around the patient rather than the hospital.
Gryffon also holds direct positions in unlisted securities. New ventures the partners participate in are, as a matter of course, held through the firm.
